I’m neither scientifically nor mathematically inclined, so I was destined to pursue a career involving people. Understanding the way people operate has always captivated me, so there wasn’t much of a surprise that I was drawn to Human Resources.
I regarded my role in HR as solving problems through people. On many cases, I diffused highly charged conflicts between individuals and teams. As an avid learner, I’ve always had a passion for developing people because I knew if the employees were successful, the organization would be successful.
I often saw individual contributors promoted because they performed well, not because they were ready to lead processes and people.
Unfortunately, leadership training wasn’t included with their promotion and they learned to manage from a place of fear and not empowerment, thus causing many of their employee relations challenges.
Oftentimes, the need to keep the train moving down the track and support HR operations took precedence to development, so I decided to create VLM Coaching & Consulting to fill the gaps in leadership development that prevent leaders and organizations from being successful.
